“Employed by armies to perform military engineering duties, a sapper has the skills to build and repair field defenses and bridges, both lay and clear minefields, and set up demolitions. They can expect to perform all of these duties in conditions of extreme danger, either in contested territory or within the enemy’s own fortifications. One of a sapper’s most perilous duties is to undermine enemy defenses, which means approaching those defenses without detection and decisively bringing them down.
To that end, where most rogues would prefer a sharp blade, a sapper’s solution to a problem is often a whole lot less subtle. An assassin might scale a wall and slit the throat of the watchman atop it. A sapper’s solution to the same problem might be to bring the whole wall down, watchman and all, with a bomb placed at a structural weak point.”
